Five Frames of Pipes from Five Cities

I started taking pictures of pipes several years ago. The way the pipes and valves contort in space and the bright colors in which they are often painted make them hidden works of art. Now I look for pipes when I’m roaming about the cities I visit. Here are five frames of pipes from five different cities.

Faded, San Francisco

I found this pipe on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. Its once-bright colors have faded. Its paint is flaking and yielding to rust. Even where the paint is struggling to hang on, the rust is emerging and inexorably spreading. I like the splash of yellow added by the pole in the foreground.

If you look in the window at the top right of the picture, you can see a reflection of Alcatraz. Put this pipe on your “must see” list for San Francisco. Let me know if you find it.

Five Frames of Photographers from Galveston

I was in Galveston late last year. It was a photographic bonanza. One thing I noticed was that there photgraphers at every turn. Here are five frames of photographers.

Seascape

This gentleman was on the beach one morning with his camera pointed toward the sea. You can tell he is serious because 1) he isn’t using a cell phone, 2) he is using a tripod, and 3) it was chilly out there and he is there anyway. I’m not sure what he was shooting. There were some ships anchored out on the horizon and there were some birds flying around. His lens does not look long enough to be a big telephoto, so maybe not serious bird photography. I’m guessing he was out there for some nice seascapes. I wished him luck.

Five Frames of the Wizarding World

I was in Orlando recently for a meeting. How could I resist visiting Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade? Well, I couldn’t, so today’s Five Frames are from the Wizarding World.

The Knight Bus

The Knight Bus, “…emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard.” Oh to be a wizard and be able to take the Knight Bus to the Leaky Cauldron (That’s in London.) Unfortunately, I’m not a wizard and I had to take a Lyft and walk. I did arrive in time to snap Stan Shunpike talking to the shrunken head.

Five Frames of Street Photography from Galveston

I spent a few days in Galveston at the end of 2018. My time there was very fruitful photographically. Here are five frames of street photography.

Speed Limit 35

The passengers in this quadracycle were not breaking the speed limit when I took this photograph. They seemed content to meander up and down the seawall seeing the sights. That sign looks like a challenge, though. I say: Go for it!

Five Botanical Frames

Here are five frames of botanical subjects taken at various location in the central Texas area.

Las Cinco Tunas

I found these colorful tunas in Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park in Fredericksburg. I did not notice the bug when I was taking the photograph. Perhaps it should be named Las Cinco Tunas y Uno Bicho. I have always been attracted to the purple/green juxtaposition of the tunas and palms of the prickly pear.

Five More Frames from the High

I visited the High Museum of Art in Atlanta in January of 2019. I was there to see the photography exhibit “Look Again: 45 Years of Collecting Photography” and an exhibit of photographs by William Christenberry, “Time and Texture“. Christenberry was a pioneer of color photography who photographed buildings and landscapes of rural Alabama annually over a period of decades beginning in the 1960s. The exhibits were excellent. I have an earlier Five Frames From The High post of hidden scenes with humorous commentary. Here I present five more frames from The High.

Guard Umbrella

I found this umbrella guarding a lower level of The High. I was struck by the contrast of the red of the canopy with the gray stone of the wall. It was early on a cloudy winter day when I snapped the shot. The shade of the umbrella was not yet needed so it stood patiently, guarding the passageway to the door that is hiding in the courtyard to the left.
