Five Frames from Galveston

I spent a few days in Galveston between Christmas and the new year in 2018. It was cloudy and rainy, but I had a great time. Here are five frames.

On the Beach

What to do if you are a kid on the beach on a cold day: run and play in the water. What to do if you are an adult: bundle up, sit, and watch the kids. Everybody wins.

Shark Head!

The guy with the shark head guards the entrance to a parking lot on Seawall Blvd. In case you can’t remember the name of the shop and you are desperate for sea shore junque, you can always just look for shark head guy.

Foggy Pleasure Pier

We were staying a few blocks down from the Pleasure Pier. I had ample opportunity to photograph the pier in various of its guises. Here is an evening shot in the fog.

Seascape with Fence

This scene looks completely wild, but I took the photo from the top of the seawall, near the Pleasure Pier.

On the Jetty

This fellow looks like he came to the jetty to do some serious thinking. From dawn to night, people would walk out to the end of this jetty and spend a minute or two gazing at the sea. One could look at the sea from the seawall, from the beach, or even from a hotel room, but the end of the jetty had a special draw. One could be surrounded by sea, feel the wind and the spray on your face, and be in the moment, alone but perhaps at one with the larger world. I feel the draw of the jetty, too.

I can’t help but think of Robert Frost’s poem, Neither Out Far Nor In Deep. Read it here.

These photos were all taken with a Canon 6DII and Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM. They were processed from RAW files with Darktable, a free program and open source (FOSS) program available for the Mac, Windoze, and various flavors of Linux.

I have lots more from Galveston. Watch for more Five Frames posts.
