Five Frames from Paintbrush Alley

Paintbrush Alley is a project sponsored by Downtown San Angelo, Inc. and Art in UnCommon Places. It’s an alley that has been worked on by over fifty artists to turn the alley into, well, a work of art. The alley’s theme is based on the movie “Giant”. “Giant” was filmed in Marfa, Texas and released in 1956. It starred Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean.

Last week I posted my “Ode to the OM-1”. This week my five frames were produced with that very same OM-1 using Kodak Portra 400. I had a thirty-six shot roll and blew them all in downtown San Angelo and in Paintbrush Alley.

Ranching and Oil

“Giant”, the movie, is all about ranching and oil. Sounds just like San Angelo.

Imaginary Pickups…

Imaginary pickups with real tailgates on them… (With apologies to Marianne Moore.)

A Frog

Here’s a frog I found. Everybody likes a frog.

A Pipe, of Course…

Given my obsession with pipes (see the Pipes Gallery and assorted posts about pipes), what better way to round out my five frames than with a pipe.

These photos were taken with an Olympus OM-1 loaded with Kodak Portra 400. The OM-1 was wearing a Zuiko 50mm f1.8 lens throughout. Holland Photo Imaging in Austin developed the film and scanned the negatives to positives. I used Darktable, a free program, to touch up the photos.

  1. Good blog. Never knew this existed. Want to see it next time I’m in town.

  2. It is pretty cool. I realized that I did not take any pictures that were recognizably from Giant, the theme movie. I’ll have to go back and do that!
