Dawn at Fulton Harbor

The Rainbow

During our Big Birding Expedition in December, we stayed at the Inn at Fulton Harbor. The Inn is directly across from Fulton Harbor, which is where you get on The Skimmer for tours of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to see the Whooping Cranes. The first morning, it was cloudy and the light was interesting. Here are some shots of Fulton Harbor at dawn.

Above is the Rainbow, a shrimp boat waiting with some others to spring into action.

Fulton Flotilla

These are shrimp boats waiting to sally forth. Captain Tommy of the Skimmer told us that the fisherman were mostly shrimpers who sometimes did some crabbing when the shrimping wasn’t good or they couldn’t fish by law.

Ship’s Wheel

This is the ship’s wheel from one of the shrimp boats. It is being lit by artificial lights as well as sunlight.

Two Shrimp Boats

Here is a pair of shrimp boats. I liked the single light, which draws your eye and makes a nice reflection in the water.

Magical Wake

I took several pictures of this cormorant as it was swimming. I didn’t notice its magical wake when I took it.

Goin’ Fishin’

This is the first fishing boat going out. Since the boat has no booms for shrimp nets, I’m guessing he isn’t going shrimping.

These photos were taken with a Canon 6DII wearing a Canon 24-70 f2.8 zoom lens. “Fulton Flotilla” was shot at 41mm. The rest were shot at 70mm. The images were processed from RAW files using Darktable, free software available for Windoze, Mac, and Linux.
