Five Frames of the Space Needle

I was in Seattle recently for a meeting but I spent more time walking around with my camera than I did attending my event. Seattle was a lot of fun. My wife, Kathryn, and I took a thousand photos. Many of these were of the iconic Space Needle. Here are five frames of the Space Needle.

Peeking

Here is the top of the Space Needle peeking over a hill in the Olympic Sculpture Park. The red thing sticking up on the left is the top of Alexander Calder’s sculpture, The Eagle, 1971.

Five Frames of Hidden Art from Indianapolis

I was in Indianapolis for a meeting in the summer of 2017 and got loose with my camera. Here are five frames of Hidden Art.

Monumental Reflections

That is the Indiana War Memorial reflecting in the glass of a building on Pennsylvania Street. The Indiana War Memorial was originally built to honor the Indiana veterans of World War I, but now houses a museum dedicated to the veterans of all U.S. wars.

Five Frames from Montserrat

Montserrat – saw mountain (serrated, like a handsaw). The mountain is home to the Benedictine abby, Santa Maria de Monserrat, which we visited in the summer of 2015 during our trip to Barcelona. Here are five frames.

Train, Train, and Another Train.

Our journey to Santa Maria de Monserrat started at the Placa Espana rail station, which was within walking distance of our hotel. Note that my previous post has photos of the Placa Espana and the Bullring, underneath which is the rail station. The R5 train towards Manresa will take you to the small town of Monistrol de Montserrat at the foot of the mountain. You can take the Rack Railway (Cremallera) or the cable car (Aeri) to the monastery. If you want to continue up the mountain you can hop on the funicular which is a kind of a cable car in which two cars are attached to the same cable and counterbalance each other as they go up and down the very steep slope of the mountain.

Five Frames from Barcelona

I visited Barcelona in the summer of 2015 to attend a scientific meeting. Since I had a limited amount of time to explore the city this is by no means a travelog. Without further ado, Five Frames from Barcelona.

View from the Museum

Here is a view from the steps of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, which is located in the Palu National (National Palace) at the top of Mountjuic. The four columns in the foreground were originally erected in 1919 and symbolized the four stripes of the Catalonian flag. They were demolished in 1929 as a move to destroy all the Catalanist symbols prior to the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition. The columns were replaced with the Magic Fountain of Montjuic, which can be seen just beyond the columns (see below). The columns were rebuilt in their present location in 2010.

Five Frames of Airplanes

In August of 2017, I was visiting Washington DC for a scientific meeting. My wife and I had only part of one day to visit the museums. We picked the National Air and Space Museum. Here are five frames of airplanes from the museum.

VIN FIZ

The first crossing of the United States by air was made in the VIN FIZ. This plane is a Wright Brothers model EX, a downsized version of the Wright Model B flyer. On September 17, Calbraith Perry Rodgers, known as Cal, set out from Sheepshead Bay, New York to attempt the crossing. He was trying to win a prize of $50,000 (the equivalent of over one million today) offered by William Randolph Hearst for the first crossing of the country by airplane in thirty days.

Five Frames for Memorial Day

On Memorial Day we remember and honor those who died serving in the United States Armed Forces. I dedicate this post to those who died and those who served.

Honor Guard

Here is part of a Navy honor guard who were waiting to participate in a ceremony on the mall in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. I spotted the honor guard marching in and took several photos as they approached. They stopped in the shade (wise move). Their fourth member, who seemed to be the one in charge, strode off to consult with the event organizer. He left these three at ease.

Five Frames of Boats from Boston

I have been fascinated by sailboats since I read Richard Henry Dana’s Two Years Before the Mast in high school. From the perspective of a land-locked teen the romance of sailing ships was enticing indeed. So it should not be surprising that I return from my travels with photos of boats. Here are five frames of boats from Boston. You can also view these photos for the next few weeks in the Five Frames Gallery.

White Boat

Here is a white rowboat waiting on dark water for its owner to come and row it home.

Five Frames of People from Five Cities

In the Cafe, Montreal, 2017

This is from the Second Cup CafĂ© and Cie on the corner of Stanley and Sainte-Catherine in Montreal. This fellow was having his morning coffee with a friend. He just screams “Montreal” to me. I can’t think of Montreal now without picturing this fellow in my mind.
