Five Frames of Photographers from Galveston

I was in Galveston late last year. It was a photographic bonanza. One thing I noticed was that there photgraphers at every turn. Here are five frames of photographers.

Seascape

This gentleman was on the beach one morning with his camera pointed toward the sea. You can tell he is serious because 1) he isn’t using a cell phone, 2) he is using a tripod, and 3) it was chilly out there and he is there anyway. I’m not sure what he was shooting. There were some ships anchored out on the horizon and there were some birds flying around. His lens does not look long enough to be a big telephoto, so maybe not serious bird photography. I’m guessing he was out there for some nice seascapes. I wished him luck.

Nature Photography

This fellow was doing it the hard way. He was shooting those gulls with a cell phone. You’ve go to admire his perseverance.

Fashion Photography

I saw this pair shooting at several locations up and down the seawall. It was a windy, chilly day and I feared for the young woman’s toes. She is tougher than me to be out barefoot. The photographer is using a cell phone here, too. If you enlarge the photo, you can see her image on his phone.

Street Photography

I shot this family group because they looked interesting. When I looked at the photo I realized that I caught the girl snapping a shot. There was a family group playing at the base of a jetty in the general direction she is aiming. For you gearheads, it looks like she is using a Nikon D3400 with a AF-P 18-55 mm kit lens.

When they walked past, she checked me out! No, really! OK, full disclosure, she was checking out my camera gear. I was wearing a Canon 6DII with the Canon 100-400mm zoom lens, which is nearly fourteen inches long when it is fully extended with it’s hood deployed. This lens attracts attention. People seem to think that you know what you are doing if you carry around big gear. I often follow the teachings of Theodore Roosevelt who said “Speak softly and carry a big lens.” Perhaps I misquote.

Seascape II

This photo was going to be about the sailboat. Then I noticed the photographer. So it’s a twofer. I have no idea what camera he is using. He sat on that bench for quite a while, watching the world go by and occasionally snapping. Nice way to spend an afternoon.

These photographs were taken with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II wearing a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens. The photos were processed from RAW files using Darktable, which is free and open source software (FOSS) available for Windoze, Mac, and various flavors of Linux.

  1. Once again, good stuff. I think you capture “beachy” stuff really well.
